PURPOSE
Financial scholarships are available through the Alamitos Bay Sailing Foundation (ABSF) as a means to assist youth sailors with participation in sailing programs in the local area. Our intention is to assist applicants who have a keen interest in learning to sail or continuing to sail and may have financial barriers that may be limiting their opportunity.
The Scholarships are reviewed and approved by a joint committee of volunteers on the ABSF Grant Committee.
The Scholarships can only be used for sailing class tuition in programs based in the Alamitos Bay or Long Beach Harbor area. The following sailing programs will be considered:
High School Sailing
Junior Sailing or Community Sailing Youth Programs
(Please note: requests for grants for clinics, coaching or travel should use the ABSF Grant Application)
Scholarship Request Guidelines
The following parameters have been set forth by the ABSF Board of Directors as the minimum criteria to be met by sailors wishing to apply for a scholarship. Individuals must submit the following documents to apply for a grant:
A complete Application with a description of your funding needs.
Along with your application, submit a “Request Letter” (or email) describing: 1) reason for needing a scholarship and 2) what your sailing goals are. Send to alamitosbaysf@gmail.com.
Within 30 days after the sailing class or program is over, submit a “Thank you letter” to ABSF summarizing your experience and how the scholarship helped you. Keep in mind, part or all of your letter may be re-printed in the ABYC Sou’wester and used on the ABSF website.
Selection Process
Full and partial Scholarship awards will be based on several factors, including but not limited to funds available, number of requests received and needs of the applicant/individual/family. If you are able to pay a portion of the tuition we encourage you to submit for a partial scholarship so we are able to provide opportunities for all applicants throughout the year. A maximum of 2 scholarship awards are available per sailor in a given calendar year. If the ABSF decides to offer a scholarship, you will receive a decision and check within 2 to 4 weeks of your application submittal. If you (the scholarship recipient) do not use the funds as intended, you are required to return the funds or risk exclusion from future grants.
